Week 2:: Chp. 6

Blogs is something new to me, I've heard about them but have never personally done any blogging. But as far I can see blogs are a great way to communicate with others. It could be personal, business related, or educatinal blogs. Either way it is a great way for keep in touch with other people. I think blogs might be effective in education, but one has to be careful with them. The only reason I have doubt is because there are so many things online like facebook and myspace that might distract students from doing what they are supposed to be doing. For example, something that should take them half an hour to do might take them an hour because they were browsing the web. Its an effective way to learn if used right, and a waste of time if students are not using the web appropiately to do theier work.

I think blogs would be a great idea one could incorporate into the curriculum, as a teacher. I hope to become a high school math teacher. Sometimes students have so much going on their high school years that they don't have enough time to come in and get the extra help they want. Using a blog would enable them to post questions at any time and get the helped they wanted not only from me but also the students. I don't know if wiki pages would be a great idea for the classroom. I think it may be useful but the fact that anyone can go on there and edit the pages make the information unreliable.

  1. I agree with your idea of letting students blog. There have been plenty of times in high school when i haven't understood what to do on homework. Sometimes hearing a different explanation can really help.

  2. I agree with you in regard to Wiki being unreliable. I can't tell you how many times I have been told by my professors that Wikipedia cannot be used as a source for any paper that I write. Therefore, I don't think I will use Wiki pages in my classroom. I think there are probably enough websites with accurate information to choose from.
